Over the years India’s contribution to the development of human resources in Nepal has  been one of the major aspects of India-Nepal cooperation. Around 3000 scholarships/seats are provided every year by GOI though the Embassy of India, Kathmandu to Nepali nationals for undergoing various courses at the Ph.D/Masters, Bachelors and Plus-two levels in India as well as Nepal. These scholarships/seats are provided for a wide spectrum of studies ranging from engineering, medicine, agriculture, pharmacology, veterinary sciences, computer application, business administration, music and fine arts, etc. 

Around 220 Scholarships are given for studying BE/B.Tech, B.Sc,(Agri),  B. Pharma and B.Sc (Dairy Tech) under Compex Nepal Scholarship. Around 110 scholarships are there to undertake undergraduate courses such as BBA/BCA/ Others including 5 scholarships for undertaking Music/Fine Arts courses, three scholarships for studying Hospitality and Management under General Cultural Scholarship Scheme. 

120 Scholarships for undertaking post graduate courses in disciplines like MBA/MCA and other PG level courses,10 seats for M.Sc (Ag) and 8 seats for Ph.D under Silver Jubilee Scholarship Scheme. With the aim of providing comprehensive and integrated training to in-service candidates of GoN/Public Sector nominees of GoN, 30 seats are allotted to Nepal under the Technical Cooperation Scheme (TCS) of the Colombo Plan and 220 seats for employees of GON & public/private sector under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme.

The Golden Jubilee Scholarship Scheme was implemented for the first time in 2002-03 under which 200 scholarships are awarded to Nepalese students studying in MBBS, BE/B.Tech and other undergraduate courses in Nepal. Under the Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship Scheme, initiated in 2003-04, 2000 scholarships are being provided every year to students of Class-XI and XII studying in Nepal.

The Dr. Homi J. Bhaba Scheme launched in 2004-05, provides 40 scholarships to Nepalese students for studying ME/M.Tech in India. Under a new scheme, implemented in 2005-06, 33 Nepalese students are provided scholarships for studying in Army Public Schools, in India. Bharat-Nepal Maitri Shiksha Karyakaram is a short-term course for undergraduate and post-graduate students of Nepal. The programme was launched recently to provides opportunities to the young minds to better understand different facets of life in India and India-Nepal relations and progress made by the country in various fields. Calcutta University was chosen to host the first batch of students under this Karyakaram.

COMPEX Scholarship Scheme: 

Under COMPEX Scholarship Scheme, Embassy of India provides admission to undergraduate courses in MBBS(Self financing), Engineering (BE), Pharmacy (B.Pharma), Agriculture (B.Sc.Ag), Dairy Technology (B.Sc. – DT), Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & AH) and B.Sc. (Nursing) in Indian Universities and Institutions.

AYUSH Scholarship Scheme:

Under AYUSH scholarship scheme, Embassy of India provides admission to Undergraduate/ Post Graduate courses in Ayurveda/Unani/Homeopathy system of medicines in Indian institutions.

Eligibility Criteria:

Undergraduate Courses: Candidates must have passed Class-XII or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as subjects and should have secured a minimum of 50% marks in English in class XII. The candidate should be between 17 and 22 years of age. The age restriction may be relaxable in deserving cases, as deemed by the Embassy.

Postgraduate Courses: Candidates must have passed graduation level examination in the recognized system of medicine with a minimum of 50% marks in English in Class-XII examination. The candidate should be 30 years or less.

Selection Process: Selection will be based on academic performances of the candidates. Selected candidates will be notified over phone by Education Wing of the Embassy. Candidates are requested not to contact Embassy for this.

APS Scholarship Scheme:

Under APS Scholarship Scheme, Embassy  of India provides admission to School level courses starting from Class VI to IX  and XI ( boys and girls) in Army Public Schools (APS) in  APS Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand), Class VI to IX (boys only) for APS Dhaula Kuan (Delhi), and class VI to IX (girls only ) for APS Noida (UP). There are 20 seats for Class VI, 5 for Class XI in Pithoragarh, One seat each  from Class VI to IX (Boys only) in Dhaula Kuan and one seat each from Class VI to IX(Girls only) in Noida.

Eligibility Criteria:

(i) For class VI to  IX   &  XI: 60% marks for Govt school and 70% for private schools.  Students applying for class VI and onwards must have passed the examination before applying. Appearing students will not be considered for the next higher class.

(ii) Candidates having good proficiency in English should only apply.

(iii) Candidates should be medically fit to join APSs.

(iv) Age criteria: The students should complete the under-mentioned years of age:

            Class VI:           10 years

            Class VII:          11 years

            Class VIII:         12 years

            Class IX:           13 years

            Class XI:           15 years

General Scholarship Scheme  (GSS):

Under GSS, Embassy of India provides admission to under-graduate courses i:e BBA, BCA, BA, BA(Hons), B.Sc., B.Com, BA (Music/Performing Arts) under General Scholarship Scheme in Indian Universities.

Eligibility:

(i) Applicants must have passed Class 12 or equivalent examination with compatible subject in class 12 and have secured minimum of 60% marks in aggregate as well as in English. 

(ii) Applicants should be between 17 to 22 years.

(iii) For Music: Photographs of performances, audio/video cassettes/CD’s must be produced.

(iv) For Fine Arts: Photographs of arts / sculpture must be produced.

Under this scheme, admission is provided to B.Sc (Hospitality & Hotel Management) course in Indian institutions.

(i) Applicants must have passed Class 12 or equivalent examination with compatible subject in class 12 and have secured minimum of 60% marks in aggregate as well as in English.

Silver Jubilee Scholarship Scheme (SJSS):

Under SJSS, admission is provided to Nepalese candidates for MBA, MCA, MA, M.Sc & Ph.D in all streams except Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine and Para-medical courses in Indian Universities and Institutions.

Eligibility:

For post graduate courses-MBA/MCA/M.Sc/MA: Applicants should be graduates, should have minimum 60% marks in aggregate at the bachelors’ level from a recognized University /Institute, minimum 60% marks in English in Class XII and should be 30 years or less.  Subject opted for post-graduation should be compatible with the subject taken at bachelor’s level. Appearing candidates will not be considered.

For Ph.D course: Applicants should be postgraduate with good academic record with minimum 60% marks in aggregate from a recognized University. Age limit for Ph.D is 35 years for men and 45 years for women. Appearing candidates will not be considered.

Applicants should have minimum 60% aggregate marks in BE and should be 25 years or less in age.

Applicants should have minimum 60% aggregate marks in B.Sc(Agriculture) and minimum 50% marks in English in Class XII and should be 25 years or less in age.

ITEC/Colombo Plan:

Under ITEC/Colombo Plan, short term training is provided in diverse fields to employees of GON, public/private sector to upgrade their professional skills. Brochure giving details of courses offered under ITEC/Colombo Plan is available at Embassy of India’s website. 

Eligibility:

(i) Candidate should meet the criteria of basic/professional qualification & should have minimum experience as specified in the training brochure.

(ii) Applicants should be between 25 and 45 years of age.

(iii) Candidate should possess working knowledge of English to follow the course.

(iv) Candidate should be medically fit to undertake the course

(v) If a candidate has already attended a Course sponsored by Government of India, he/she is not eligible for ITEC Courses.

Selection Process: Candidates will be interviewed at the time of submitting the applications at the Embassy of India, Kathmandu. Final selection will be made by Indian authorities based on applicant’s academic record, experience and relevance of course applied for vis-a-vis applicants’ profile.

MAHATMA GANDHI SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME

Under Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship Scheme, Embassy of India provides 2000 scholarships to Nepalese students enrolled in Class-XI in recognized schools/colleges in Nepal.

Eligibility:

(i)  Candidates should be Nepalese citizen.

(ii) Candidates should be regular student of class XI and studying in any recognized school/ college of Nepal. They should have secured minimum 55% marks in aggregate in Class X/SLC, if passed out from Government schools, 75% marks in aggregate, if passed out from private schools located in the districts of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur. For students from rest of Nepal minimum 50% marks, if passed out from Government schools, 70% for those passed out from private schools.

(iii) Family income of the candidate must be less than NRs. 1,20,000/- per annum. 

(iv) Applicants should be between 14 – 20 years of age. 

Scholarship Amount

Selected students will get a scholarship of NRs. 2,000/- per month in the first year. This will be continued in the second year also, provided the awardee gets 50% or above marks in Class-XI. The scholarship will be discontinued if the percentage of marks obtained by the awardee falls below 50% in class XI or for any other reason that the Embassy may deem necessary.

GOLDEN JUBILEE SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME 

Under Golden Jubilee Scholarship Scheme, Embassy of India provides scholarships to students enrolled in Bachelor 1styear/1st semester of undergraduate courses in recognized educational institutions in Nepal. A total of 200 scholarships are provided under the scheme as per the following distribution:-

  1. Medical:                          50 (5 years course)
  2. Engineering:                  50 (4 years course)
  3. Other disciplines:        100 (Scholarship will be restricted to 3 yrs only

Eligibility: 

(i) Candidate must be a Nepali citizen and have secured at least 70% marks in aggregate at the Intermediate (+2) level/ Class 12th

(ii) Family income of the candidate must be less than NRs. 1, 20,000/- per annum.

(iii) Applicants should be between 17 and 22 years of age.

Scholarship Amount:           

Selected students in medical / engineering disciplines will get a scholarship of NRs. 4,000/-per month. The scholarship for students in other disciplines will be NRs. 3,000/- per month. The scholarship will be discontinued if the percentage of marks obtained by the awardees falls below 50% in each subsequent year or for any other reason that the Embassy may deem necessary.
